Lisa Hanlon, Integrative Clinical Nutritionist
Clinical Nutritionist | Oncology Nutrition & Cancer Survivorship
Hi, I'm Lisa Hanlon, a degree-qualified Clinical Nutritionist with advanced training in integrative oncology and a Master of Research (under examination) from Western Sydney University.
I provide evidence-informed nutrition support for people navigating cancer treatment, recovery and survivorship, with a particular interest in the longer-term health issues that can emerge after cancer — including changes in weight and body composition, metabolic and cardiovascular health, bone health, menopause, gut health and maintaining muscle and strength.
My approach combines clinical nutrition, research and practical, personalised care to help people understand what matters for their health and feel more confident about the choices they make.
Why oncology?
My interest in cancer care is both professional and deeply personal.
In 2020, I lost my sister Kim to melanoma.
That experience changed the direction of my work. It gave me firsthand insight into the complexity of cancer care and strengthened my interest in what happens not only during treatment, but in the months and years afterwards.
Cancer treatment may end, yet its effects on health continue. People may be left navigating changes in weight, energy, muscle, bone health, cardiovascular risk, menopause, gut health and uncertainty about what they should, or shouldn't, be eating.
I wanted to contribute to better support during that period.
Today, oncology nutrition and cancer survivorship sit at the centre of both my clinical and research work.
Clinician and researcher
My clinical work is informed by research, and my research is strongly influenced by the questions I see arising in clinical practice.
I completed a Master of Research at Western Sydney University (under examination) examining GP perspectives on preventing and managing weight gain following breast cancer.
My research explored the challenges faced within Australian primary care, including fragmented care pathways, communication between oncology and primary care, access to appropriate services and opportunities for better coordinated survivorship care.
This work has strengthened my commitment to helping bridge the gap between cancer treatment and long-term health.
My approach
Evidence-informed. Personalised. Collaborative.
There is no single diet or supplement protocol that's right for every person affected by cancer.
Your diagnosis, treatment, pathology, medications, symptoms, diet, lifestyle, family history and personal goals all matter.
My role is to help translate the evidence into practical nutrition and lifestyle strategies that make sense for you.
Food forms the foundation of my approach. Supplements are used strategically where there is a clear rationale, with particular attention to safety and potential interactions during cancer treatment.
And where appropriate and with your consent, I can work alongside your GP, oncologist and other healthcare practitioners so that nutrition support complements your broader medical care.

Beyond the Clinic
I believe good healthcare should help people understand their health, not simply tell them what to do.
That's why education is an important part of my work, through my clinical practice, research, writing and the Well Beyond Cancer podcast.
My aim is to help people cut through conflicting nutrition information and develop realistic, sustainable strategies that support their health through cancer treatment and for the years beyond it.
